What is AVA?
AVA is a video streaming service that provides access to a world of European and international films from the comfort of your own home. With AVA you can stream a unique selection of arthouse features, world-class documentaries, and acclaimed and award-winning short films from a selection of titles not commonly available on other mainstream platforms.
How can I start streaming films on AVA?
Just log in to the VPN network of your university and you will be granted access to AVA content automatically.
I can’t log in to AVA. What am I doing wrong?
If you are unable to log in to AVA, please check your VPN connection and make sure you have entered your VPN credentials correctly.
If your institution authenticates via SAML 2.0/Shibboleth, please ensure that your library or university already cooperates with AVA and check if you have entered your username and password correctly.
If you still have problems logging in, please contact your institution.
How much does AVA cost?
It’s free - if you have a valid VPN network account of one of the universities participating in hbz consortium, then AVA is already included in your yearly subscription.
Which films are selected for AVA?
AVA works closely with some of Europe’s most renowned film festivals and distributors to curate a unique viewing experience. We focus on quality content and target our film selection toward the interests of our users.
How can I search for films on AVA?
AVA offers a curated selection of quality films that users can browse by theme or topic. These selections can be found in the menu along with film type and genre navigation functions.
You can also use the search function in the menu bar to search by film title, director, cast or any other keyword and filter the results of your search queries afterwards.
The film carousels on our home page change monthly in order to highlight particular areas of interest within our existing selection and to alert you of new arrivals.
Can I show the films available on AVA in class?
It depends on the type of class. In seminars that are not open to the public and for which students must register, the films can be shown. The prerequisite is that only university members, who through their affiliation with the institution already have access to AVA, are part of the seminar.
However, the films may not be shown in semi-public lectures where non-university members can also attend.
For semi-public or public screenings, screening rights must be obtained from AVA for a fee.
What languages does AVA support?
You can choose between the English and the German interface. To pick a language, use the language selection tool in the main menu.
What devices is AVA available on?
AVA works on all major devices and browsers that support HTML5.

What is the recommended internet speed for AVA?
We would recommend a download speed of at least 3 Mbps to play a single video stream in standard resolution. The optimal internet speed for HD video streaming is 5 Mbps.

Can I permanently delete my AVA account?
Termination of your AVA account is not necessary. The universities which participate in the hbz consortium automatically provides free access to AVA services to all their registered users.
