Samuele is 12 years old and after school he meets his friends or roams around with a homemade slingshot. He wants to be a fisherman, like his father. Samuele lives on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, where life has always been shaped by what the sea brings. For years now, it has been mainly people - thousands of refugees who, in the desperate hope of a better life, dare to make a life-threatening journey.
For one year, director Gianfranco Rosi observed the everyday life on Lampedusa, the "Island of Hope", which became the home for countless refugees. This moving documentary film convinced both audience and critics at the Berlinale 2016 and won the Golden Bear for Best Film.
